Installing New Energy Efficient Windows Can Increase Overall Efficiency Of Your Home

Installing energy efficient windows in your home can help reduce energy costs, saving money on your yearly bills.  Windows provide homes with natural light, warmth, and ventilation, but can also negatively impact your home’s energy efficiency.

Energy Efficiency

There are many factors that determine how energy efficient a home is.  A home that has a High Energy Efficiency, has systems or products installed that greatly reduce the amount of energy consumed or wasted. Some of these systems or products include, new windows, CFL or LED light bulbs, proper insulation, attic ventilation systems, and renewable energy sources (i.e. solar panels).

How Do I Choose New Energy-Efficient Windows?

The first thing to look at is how old your windows are.  Older windows are extremely inefficient when it comes to conserving energy. So much so, that the most cost-effective thing to do would be to replace them, rather than to try to improve their efficiency.   There are things you can look for when choosing a new window for your home:

  • Determine your energy performance rating, this will help you decide what type of window you need for your climate or home’s design.
  • Based on the location of the windows (north-facing, south-facing, etc.), you can determine what quality of glass to use.  Low-emissivity (Low-e) glass can help control heat loss and gain.  South-facing windows should have a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) greater than .6 and a U-factor of .35 to prevent heat loss and to reduce heat transfer.
  • Look at all parts of the window, to determine it’s efficiency.  Even the window frames can conduct heat, contributing to a windows overall energy efficiency.

Improving Efficiency of Existing Windows

If you are on a budget, there are ways to help improve the efficiency of your current windows to a certain degree. Adding caulking or weather stripping around your windows can greatly reduce drafts and air loss.  Using windows treatments or coverings, can also help reduce energy loss.

Express Window Services can help you with all questions you may have regarding your windows and whether or not you should replace them.  Adding new windows not only helps with your overall energy efficiency, but it can also increase the value of your home!  It is a great investment, installing new windows will pay for itself in a short time from the reduced energy costs your home will have.
